Brookscroft Road Play Area

London Borough of Waltham Forest

This play area was developed in Brockies Court and led by a resident, Max Dewdney, who worked with the community to encourage the council to fund local street play. Mr Dewdney developed the initial concept and APES collaborated on the play elements

The basic concept is that it is an “inside-out” building, including windows and window boxes. It has proved very popular with local kids because of its centralised location, solving a long-term problem with anti-social behaviour.

All windows are made from reclaimed hardwood yielded by the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Everything bespoke and manufactured - including swings, a climbing tower, a stage, planting, a public book-lending library, a slide and spinning discs – is built from recycled material, including Perspex.
